January Is A Great Month To Organize……
Yes, Organize! You already have many of your hard to get to items out of storage for the holiday decorating. This is a good time to weed out all of the old, tired Christmas decorations that have seen better days ! No longer work? (the lights?) Throw em out! No longer fit your Holiday Color Scheme? Toss them in the yard sale box! While your at it you may as well do a few other things to make your life neater, cleaner and more organized! Not to mention saving you time and stress!
Killing Two Birds With One Stone
Since you are all ready digging around in the attic and garage, you may as well start a yard sale pile. Open some of those other plastic storage containers and prep for your spring yard sale. It is easier to go through the items now while your there than to wait till the spring when you are ready for your yard sale. besides, who wants to be digging around in a hot attic during beautiful Spring weather? That is the time of year you are going to want to be outside planting your Tulip Bulbs or painting flowers on you gate! You know… the fun spring stuff!
Out With The Old And In With The New!
When I decorate for Christmas, I also have to put up quite a lot of other accent items in the house to make room for the Christmas items. When I am un packing those to use the bins to re pack my Christmas Items, I decide which items I want to stay out, put away or re-sell and do it then. Any new items that I had stashed in the cabinets till I had time to find a placement for have found there new home. I essentially re-style, up date and refresh my every day decor while putting away the Christmas chatchkies my shelves at this time.
The cabinet built ins next to my fireplace tend to “collect” anything new I have purchased till I have time to decide where it belongs in my decor scheme. “Odd” items that need to be stored in the attic or garage or another closet also tend to land there. Now that Christmas is over and I am putting away the candles and un packing the everyday items, I find this is a great time to down grade all those items I have stashed in the built ins as well as the decor I am putting back out. I remove everything in the cabinets, vacuum them and place anything I want kept there back neatly and throw out, yard sale box, or store properly, the things that have accumulated there all year.
Christmas Projects For Next Year
I will take the Christmas project materials that I bought on clearance immediately after or just before the holidays and put them in my craft closet. That way I can work on them during the year when I have time and they will be ready for next season without stress and time constraints. Of course, since I am putting those things in the craft closet as well as some very precious Glass Holiday items, I am going to take this opportunity to down grade and organize that cabinet as well.
It is also a great time to do any “updating” to your Holiday items so that they align with your current color scheme or theme. Take these Darling Deer I purchased just before Christmas. I need to change their fur stoles to silver or gray, and paint their antlers and hooves silver to match my decor. With a long list of “to do’s” before the holidays, I did not have the time and if I leave it till I pull out my Christmas decor next year, I’ll bet I don’t have the time then either. This is the best time to do those little changes as well as any repairs on things I would like to keep.
Make A List
Not necessarily for Santa but we’ll take any help we can get! Take stock of the items you have. Take stock of the items you need and the items you want. Measure! take measurements NOW! For instance, If you need more C-9 red bulb strings for the front yard, measure the footage you need. Write down the brand, size, color footage, any particulars you need to get them for next year. Not all stringers have the same distance between lights. If you are adding to what you all ready have, you need the specifics.
By the time you pull out you decorations next year, you will have let a couple of months of buying opportunity pass you by. I have found that if you wait till Thanksgiving to try to find specific items, they most often times are all ready sold out! I keep a list on my cell phone so whenever the opportunity presents itself, (yard sales, estate sales), I am equipped to make the purchase.
as you can see from my Christmas decor, ( see “HOLIDAY HOME TOUR ELEGANCE IN CRYSTAL WHITE “) If you buy collections or specific things, It only makes sense. I buy Snow Globes, Finials, trees and Deer specifically. I only see these items for a few weeks a year so it is hard to remember what I have. Take pictures of your finished decor each year so that in September (lol!) when the Christmas goods hit the shelf you are not standing in the middle of the isle scratching your head…“do I have this?”. I used to do that every year but now I can pull up the pic of my Mantel and see exactly which snow globes I have!
The End Game
So now not only have I put away my Christmas Goods, I have Organized my projects for next year, Repaired and up dated items to better suite my holiday decor and made lists of what I’ll need to buy for next season as well as taken pictures of what I do have so as not to repeat them. I have also re ordered my craft closet, organized and cleaned my built in cabinets as well as spring cleaned the attic and garage. The everyday decor is refreshed and as a super duper bonus, I am ready for my Spring yard sale! All this and It’s only January 8th !
